Tell me MORE!

In this project I am investigating the use of family photographs and natural communication strategies to support the communication skills of children with developmental disabilities. Parents and teachers will be provided with free training, support, and materials to support their child’s communication abilities during everyday family routines.

Diversifying the Educator Workforce in Special Education (DEWSE)

Although the percentage of students who identify as non-white exceeds the number of students who identify as white in the United States, over 79% of all public school teachers identify as white. This difference between teachers and students is particularly prevalent in the field of special education. Disparity of representation can lead to misidentification of students of color in special education. In this collaborative mixed-methods project, we are investigating the motivating factors and barriers to the recruitment and retention of special educators from historically marginalized backgrounds.
